7 Kid Approved Winter Activities

It’s coooold outside. The fireplace is on, the blankets are layered, and we’re all wearing more pairs of socks than we can count. While we love a cozy winter day just as much as the next person, it can be difficult when the family is all cooped up inside with excess energy and nowhere to work it off. Let’s face it, there are only so many holiday movie marathons we can take. So, here are seven kid-approved outdoor winter activities to get outside, get some fresh air, and get a bit of a change of scenery.

1. Go on a tree hunt

Do you live close to lots of nature? Make a list of the trees that are common in your area, bundle up the kiddos, and head out for a walk to see how many you can spot together! Not only will it be educational and give your kids a fun task to dedicate their energy toward, but it will teach them observational skills and to appreciate the world around them. PS – if you want your kiddos to keep extra warm in the stroller, make sure to properly outfit your stroller before heading out the door. The plush seat liner will keep your littles super cozy while the foot muff and bunting are perfect for keeping them snug and weather proofed from head to toe.

2. Make campfire cinnamon rolls

We will forever and always be diehard fans of s’mores. But, why not change things up with some campfire cinnamon rolls? Whether you want to indulge in a morning treat or do a cozy, after-dinner snack, the whole family will love everything from preparing the dough to enjoying them around the fire.

 3. Go stargazing

Let’s take advantage of those early sunsets. There’s something so magical about grabbing a cup of hot cocoa, bundling up, and heading out to look at the stars. It’s a great way to make family memories and appreciate the beauty of nature while getting a little fresh air before heading off to bed. Plus — fresh airs leads to better sleep and we all want that.

4. Build a snow volcano

Because who doesn’t love a science experiment? A snow volcano is the perfect educational and fun activity that keeps the mess outside (best part? It uses items you already have around the house). Older kids will love to learn something new, and the littles can enjoy the magic of it all.

5. Find the perfect hill

You know the hill we’re talking about. That hill that you loved when you were a kid that you and your friends or siblings would spend hours rolling down? Well, it’s time to go scouting. There’s something so fun and pure about finding the perfect rolling hill when you’re a kid, and what better time to find it when it’s covered in fluffy snow? It’s time to start hill hunting.

6. Head to the zoo

We tend to think of going to the zoo when it’s nice and warm outside, but don’t miss out by skipping it in the winter! Zoos often put on really interesting exhibits dedicated to animals that live in colder climates. They also often create really spectacular displays during the holidays! So, if you haven’t said hello to your local animals in a while, it might be time to pay them a visit.

7. Play in the snow

If you live in an area with lots of snow, then you may have come to view it as your enemy. But, it’s time to make it your ally. The good thing about snow is that there are tons of opportunities for entertainment! There are always the old standbys: snowmen, snowball fights, and snow angels. But, there is way more that can be done! Dig an obstacle course, and let the kids go wild. Or, fill spray bottles with water and food coloring, and let your kids create some art! Get creative.
